The lighthouse keeper kept a log for forty years. Each entry was short: the weather, the ships that passed, and anything unusual.⏎
Most days held nothing unusual at all. A gull on the rail. Fog until noon. A fishing boat that waved as it went by.⏎
But read together, the entries made a kind of long, slow story. Storms arrived and left. Children grew up and moved to the mainland.⏎
The keeper never wrote about himself. Still, by the last page, you felt you knew him: patient, exact, and quietly glad of the company of ships.⏎
When the light was automated, he handed over the log with the keys. The new system needed neither, but somebody kept both anyway.
