The most important fact is we will not sell your private data that we collect on our site to any business partner, without your permission.

Is my personal data secure?
We provide reasonable administrative, technical security measures in place to protect your personal information. However, despite of any our efforts, no security systems are 100% effective so we cannot warrant the security of your personal information.
What are cookies? Why do we use them?
A cookie, also known as browser/web cookie, is a small piece of data sent from a website and stored on a user's computer while the user is browsing web. We use them to identify you and let you access your account data.
We also use Google Analytics cookies to count visits and see which lessons people finish. In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland they are set only if you accept them in the cookie banner. Elsewhere they are on unless you turn them off, which you can do at any time with the cookie settings link in the footer.
Error reporting and session recording
When something goes wrong on the site, a report is sent to Sentry, an error-tracking service we use to find and fix faults. A report contains the technical details of the failure — the page, the browser, the error and where in our code it happened. It does not contain your name, your email address or the contents of anything you sent us, because we have switched those off.
With your consent we also record a small sample of browsing sessions through the same service: about one session in twenty, plus any session in which an error occurs. A recording captures what was clicked, what was scrolled and which pages were visited. It does not capture what you type or what you read: every piece of text on the page and every character entered into a form is masked before the recording leaves your browser, and images and video are blocked. We cannot read your typing tests, your password or your messages in a recording, and neither can Sentry.
Session recording only happens if you accepted analytics in the cookie banner. If you declined, or have not chosen yet, nothing is recorded. You can change your mind at any time using the cookie settings link in the footer; recording stops immediately.
Sessions on child accounts, in kids mode and of school students are never recorded, whatever the parent has consented to for their own account. We use Sentry (Functional Software, Inc.) for technical error monitoring. Our Sentry organization’s data storage region is configured in the United States, and processing is governed by Sentry’s Data Processing Amendment.
How we measure what works
We keep our own record of how the site is used, so we can see which pages help people learn and where they get stuck. It is stored in our database, is not shared with advertisers, and is not used to show you ads.
What we record. The pages you visit, and the main things you do on them: starting and finishing a typing test, a lesson task or a game; opening the pricing page; signing in; and starting a checkout. With each, we store the time, the page, your browser type and the country your connection comes from; this record keeps the country, not your IP address. We also record where the visit came from: the website that linked to us, or a campaign tag in the link. We never record what you type, your email address, or anything you enter into a form.
A visit and a browser. A random visit identifier groups one visit's pages together. It lasts until 30 minutes of inactivity, or until you close the browser. If you allow analytics in the cookie banner (or have not turned them off, outside the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland), we also keep a random identifier in your browser's local storage, so we can tell a returning browser from a new one. Choosing “Decline” deletes it straight away. When you are signed in, the record is linked to your account.
Recordings. If a visit was one of the sampled session recordings described above, its record holds the recording's identifier, so we can watch the visit when investigating a problem.
Children and how long we keep it. Nothing is recorded in kids mode or for child accounts, and school students’ records hold no recording identifier. Detailed records are deleted after 13 months; a summary of each visit (where it started and how far it got) is deleted after 3 years.

Do we comply with COPPA?
The Typing Cat is not directed to children under 13, and a child cannot create an account here on their own. Our sign-up requires you to be 13 or older.
A child under 13 can only be on The Typing Cat through a child account, which a parent or guardian creates from inside their own account and controls from their parent dashboard, or through a class their school runs. Before adding a child, a parent reads our Children’s Privacy Notice and gives verifiable consent. Parents can see everything the child does, change what the child can reach, and delete the child and all of their data at once from that dashboard or by emailing us.
For a child account we ask for a first name, a birth year and an avatar picked from a fixed set of cartoon characters, and nothing else. The birth year only picks the right course and lesson length. There is no email address of the child’s own, no date of birth, no photograph and no contact details. Child accounts have no public profile, cannot message anyone, are never shown advertising, are never session-recorded and never load third-party analytics.
Students in a school class are treated the same way. The school consents for parents, for the school’s educational purpose only, after reading our Student Data Privacy Notice. Students never see adverts or marketing, even after their school seat ends.
