Our commitment to making The Typing Cat usable for everyone, regardless of ability or assistive technology.

WCAG 2.1 AA Compliance

The Typing Cat strives to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at the AA level. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible to people with disabilities and more user-friendly for everyone.

We continuously review our site and work to ensure it meets or exceeds the WCAG 2.1 AA requirements across all four principles: Perceivable, Operable, Understandable, and Robust.

Accessibility Features

Keyboard navigation — All interactive elements are fully operable with a keyboard. Skip links allow you to jump directly to the main content area.
Screen reader support — ARIA landmarks, labels, and live regions provide real-time announcements of typing statistics, errors, and achievements.
Color contrast — Text and interactive elements meet WCAG 2.1 AA contrast ratio requirements (4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text).
Reduced motion — Animations are automatically disabled when the operating system's "reduce motion" preference is enabled.
High contrast support — The interface adapts when high contrast mode is enabled, increasing border widths and ensuring sufficient color differentiation.
Focus indicators — Visible focus rings are displayed on all interactive elements during keyboard navigation.
Semantic HTML — Proper heading hierarchy, landmark regions, and ARIA attributes throughout the application.
Responsive design — Content reflows and remains usable at 200% zoom and on small viewports without horizontal scrolling.

Keyboard Shortcuts

The following keyboard shortcuts are available throughout the application:

`Escape`	Close modals and dialogs
`Arrow keys`	Navigate within lists, menus, and lesson grids

The Typing Cat has been designed to work well with popular screen readers including NVDA, JAWS, and VoiceOver. Here are some tips for getting the best experience:

Typing lessons — When a lesson starts, the target text is read aloud. As you type, live regions announce your current speed, accuracy, and any errors in real time.
Navigation — Use the "Skip to main content" link at the top of each page to bypass the navigation bar. Landmark regions (banner, navigation, main, contentinfo) are available for quick jumping.
Lesson selection — Course and lesson lists are keyboard navigable. Arrow keys move between items, and Enter opens the selected lesson.
Results and statistics — After completing a lesson, your results (WPM, accuracy, errors) are announced automatically via ARIA live regions.
Achievements — When you earn an achievement or badge, an assertive announcement is made so you do not miss it.

Known Limitations

While we strive for full accessibility, some areas are still being improved:

The on-screen virtual keyboard in typing lessons is primarily a visual aid and may not convey full key-position context to screen reader users.
Some chart and graph components in the analytics dashboard use visual representations that may not have complete text alternatives yet.
Third-party embedded content (advertisements) may not fully meet our accessibility standards.
